The Yarn Math

About The Yarn Math

Free, fast calculators for knitters, crocheters and quilters.

The Yarn Math is a small collection of free calculators for people who knit, crochet and sew. It takes care of the numbers that interrupt a project: spacing increases evenly across a row, working out how much yarn to buy, turning a gauge swatch into a cast-on, converting needle and hook sizes and sizing a quilt.

Every tool runs in your browser. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to install, and the pages work on a phone sitting next to your knitting.

Where the numbers come from

Yarn weights, gauge ranges and needle and hook sizes follow the Craft Yarn Council standards. Yarn amounts are estimates based on fabric area and stitch density, calibrated to typical pattern yardage. Your own gauge, stitch pattern and yarn will change the result, so treat the numbers as a planning guide and always check your pattern.
